I&#8217;m your host, Chris Boot. Joining me in the studio is <strong data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"315\">Angela Garth<\/strong>, Talent Acquisition for the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office. Angela, how are you doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"403\" data-end=\"414\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"414\" data-end=\"417\">Great, Chris. Good to see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"449\" data-end=\"459\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"459\" data-end=\"462\">You&#8217;re so active across all social media, but give us a little background\u2014what\u2019s your story, and what led you to your role at the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"624\" data-end=\"635\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"635\" data-end=\"638\">Well, I&#8217;m super excited to be here. I graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"767\" data-end=\"777\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"780\">I love it. You should make a show about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"838\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"841\">We should! It would be very fun and probably well-received.<br data-start=\"900\" data-end=\"903\">My career has been all about networking and building relationships. I\u2019ve pivoted quite a bit\u2014started in nonprofits with the American Heart Association, then moved into event management in the Florida Panhandle planning weddings and special events. I did really well, and the Director of HR at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort approached me about an employment manager opening. I didn\u2019t know anything about HR, but I took the leap of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For about four to five years, I managed the full employee lifecycle for three vacation rental properties, including international recruiting. I even traveled to Turkey and Jamaica. From there I worked in a few other nonprofits and recruiting roles, and that\u2019s where my passion for recruiting really took off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I saw an opening for the <strong data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1730\">first ever civilian-appointed recruiter<\/strong> for the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office\u2014and the rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"1795\" data-end=\"1805\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1805\" data-end=\"1808\">And you&#8217;ve been there almost two years now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1864\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1867\">A little over a year if you subtract my brief sabbatical. But in total, I\u2019ll have been with JSO for six years this December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"1993\" data-end=\"2003\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2003\" data-end=\"2006\">Wow. So what exactly are you doing at JSO? You\u2019re recruiting for the whole agency, right? Patrol, corrections, judicial, HR, civilian roles\u2014everything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"2159\" data-end=\"2170\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2170\" data-end=\"2173\">Absolutely. Our team is full-service. We recruit for police, corrections, judicial, and many civilian positions. We&#8217;re very active in the military community\u2014we\u2019re a SkillBridge partner and recently became a Military Spouse Employment Partner. We\u2019re focused on finding diverse individuals who want to serve and make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We even recently highlighted former athletes who joined us. A lot of people don\u2019t realize how many different roles exist at JSO beyond being a police officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2675\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2678\">Let\u2019s talk SkillBridge, because that\u2019s huge. A lot of folks leaving the military want to keep serving but not necessarily in uniform. JSO is extremely military-friendly. How does someone get into the SkillBridge program with JSO?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"2909\" data-end=\"2920\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2920\" data-end=\"2923\">The point of contact is <strong data-start=\"2947\" data-end=\"2961\">Derek Jose<\/strong>, who\u2019s been with the agency almost as long as I have. He\u2019s the link that helps candidates get started. His information is online. Right now, we&#8217;re especially focused on SkillBridge candidates entering the <strong data-start=\"3167\" data-end=\"3185\">police academy<\/strong>, but there may be civilian opportunities as the program expands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"3252\" data-end=\"3262\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3262\" data-end=\"3265\">We see hundreds of people exiting the military each year in this region\u2014Kings Bay, Mayport, NAS Jax, Camp Blanding. We want to keep that talent here. And JSO has opportunities in so many areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"3460\" data-end=\"3471\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3471\" data-end=\"3474\">Exactly. One of the biggest transformations has been in <strong data-start=\"3530\" data-end=\"3556\">civilian opportunities<\/strong>, especially <strong data-start=\"3569\" data-end=\"3596\">Crime Scene Technicians<\/strong>. We\u2019ve opened the position to civilians, and we\u2019re targeting a March 2026 academy class of about 20 individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veterans also receive preference for civilian roles. We want to highlight military spouses too\u2014they&#8217;re an incredible untapped resource. Many want purpose-driven work, and this is a powerful way to serve the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"3932\" data-end=\"3942\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3942\" data-end=\"3945\">So civilians in this role will actually be at crime scenes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"4006\" data-end=\"4017\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4017\" data-end=\"4020\">Yes. They\u2019ll handle forensics, photographs, evidence\u2014everything. Uniformed officers and sergeants will supervise the squads, but the technicians themselves are civilian professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll have an eight-week academy\u2014the first of its kind\u2014followed by field training. They\u2019ll learn policies, procedures, and complete the necessary certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"4369\" data-end=\"4379\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4379\" data-end=\"4382\">Where is the academy located?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"4413\" data-end=\"4424\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4424\" data-end=\"4427\">It&#8217;s local\u2014another big selling point\u2014and fully sponsored, meaning students don\u2019t pay for certifications. It&#8217;s at 4715 Capper Road, in the North Campus Criminal Justice Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of academies make you pay out of pocket or use the GI Bill, so we&#8217;re proud to offer a sponsored program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"4718\" data-end=\"4728\">Chris:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4728\" data-end=\"4731\">You\u2019ve done a lot in your life, and have a lot ahead of you. Why choose to work at JSO?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong data-start=\"4820\" data-end=\"4831\">Angela:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4831\" data-end=\"4834\">I was just talking about this with high school students recently. For me, it\u2019s the <strong data-start=\"4917\" data-end=\"4932\">family feel<\/strong>\u2014being part of something bigger than yourself.
