Great to have them on board. We appreciate all their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve got a little one-on-one time here at the bar, which I always love \u2014 up close and personal. Tony Davis is my guest. He\u2019s a return guest, he\u2019s an entrepreneur, he\u2019s got a new thing happening, and we\u2019re going to talk all about leadership \u2014 which I love. So let\u2019s get into it with Tony Davis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Hey Tom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Yeah, it\u2019s been a few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>And it has been great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>We had a couple of companies we started, built, sold. You guys\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Well, thank you very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>It\u2019s not easy being an entrepreneur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>It\u2019s not. You\u2019ve got to have resilience. You\u2019ve got to have mental agility, emotional intelligence, for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Know how to pivot if you have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Emotionally strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>For sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>A lot goes into it. People think, \u201cOh yeah\u2026\u201d But how many successful entrepreneurs have you talked to that said, \u201cYeah, but you should\u2019ve seen my losses\u201d? You know, there are always ideas that don\u2019t work out \u2014 but those that do\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>A lot of grit. Most entrepreneurs have a nice hard exterior\u2026 but inside, they\u2019re a mess. No doubt. And that\u2019s where my new franchise comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Yeah \u2014 tell us what it is. CrestCom Leadership?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>CrestCom Leadership Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Development \u2014 okay, great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>So I work with companies here in Northeast Florida, across all industries, all shapes and sizes \u2014 and I help transform their management teams into more effective leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Okay, how do you do that? What\u2019s the foundation of the process?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Well, the great thing about it is \u2014 our approach to leadership development is unique. We define success by changing behavior. Because if we don\u2019t change behavior, there\u2019s no leadership. Right? It\u2019s just an exercise in futility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So everything we do is focused on changing behavior. And at the core of how we do it\u2026 is accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Because Tom, how many times have you or anybody gone to training and the owner says, \u201cOkay, I expect you to be a better manager when you get back\u201d? And then what happens when you get back?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Nothing! Right? So our programs are unique. It\u2019s a 12-month development program \u2014 just four hours a month. During that time, I train them on two, two-hour modules on two different leadership skills. And then we have monthly accountability meetings in between, where we talk about takeaways and how we\u2019re applying those lessons at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Yeah. The best leaders I\u2019ve had \u2014 consistent, honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Other than that, you can be hard. You can be anything in between. But I need those things out of a leader if I\u2019m going to follow them. Is that fair?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>That\u2019s absolutely right. And here\u2019s the thing, Tom \u2014 leadership starts with self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Totally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>If you can\u2019t lead yourself\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>\u2026how are you going to lead others?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Exactly. And I tell the people I train and develop: leadership skills transcend the four walls of the workplace. It makes us better husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, citizens, and soldiers. Because whether we manage people or not, we\u2019re all leaders. It\u2019s all about mindset \u2014 how we view ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I have problems holding myself accountable, I\u2019ll struggle being accountable to others \u2014 and I won\u2019t know how to hold them accountable either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>And that applies to business life, home life \u2014 whether you&#8217;re the father of a family or a team leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Exactly. And when you put it in terms of a team, everybody should be able to hold everybody accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>So Tony, how do people not have that? Like \u2014 it\u2019s ingrained in me. It\u2019s ingrained in you. Right? Did they not learn it? Was it never instilled?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>It\u2019s the difference between having a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019d be surprised how many business owners I call here in Jacksonville and they say on the phone, \u201cNah, we\u2019re good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Yeah \u2014 what does that even mean? You don\u2019t need leadership development for your people? Or for yourself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, we\u2019ve got everything under control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a fixed mindset. And it doesn\u2019t matter who you are or what you do \u2014 we all need a growth mindset, because nobody corners the market on leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>We can all be better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Without a doubt. You\u2019ve got to be open-minded. You stall otherwise. Like, \u201cI\u2019ve never done it that way, and I never will\u2026\u201d \u2014 that\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Yeah. And you ask some of the most prominent leaders in the world what makes them great, and they\u2019ll tell you: \u201cI\u2019m always learning. I\u2019m always curious. I\u2019m always trying to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quote I love: <em>\u201cEvery day, we get better or we get worse \u2014 we never stay the same.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>And that\u2019s a choice. A choice we make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>I\u2019ll give you one if I may \u2014 I interviewed Dick Vermeil at the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Ex-Chiefs \u2014 yep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>He had this leadership framework \u2014 \u201c7 Steps to Great Leadership.\u201d I don\u2019t remember 2 through 7, but number one was this: <em>Let them know you care about them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>And if you show that \u2014 I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s sports or business \u2014 if they know you care about them, you\u2019re not just the boss, not just some leader, but someone who wants them to succeed\u2026 you can lead anybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Think about your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>You care about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>My girls know their dad loves them. I\u2019ll do anything for them. They know. It\u2019s got to be that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Look at the best coaches in the NFL \u2014 they care. They show that they care about the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Reid. Dick Vermeil. Tony Dungy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Liam Cohen here locally \u2014 I think he\u2019s showing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Exactly. And that\u2019s the difference between a manager and a leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managers get people to do what they need by any means necessary. Leaders \u2014 people <em>want<\/em> to do the work for them, because they\u2019re seen as an asset, not a pawn. And because they care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Message to leaders: Don\u2019t be an act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>Exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>Don\u2019t put on a show. Be who you are every day \u2014 and if it\u2019s good, people will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>You\u2019re exactly right. Be real. And you know what \u2014 it\u2019s okay to be vulnerable. Your humility precedes trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tony Davis<\/strong><br>And when you have the trust of your people \u2014 they\u2019ll go through battles for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom McManus<\/strong><br>No doubt. That\u2019s great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony, great to have you back, man.
