Our legal expertise includes aviation accident litigation, aircraft transactions and maintenance agreements, aviation regulation, airport operations, and partnership and corporate aviation contracts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Transcription:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian: <\/strong>welcome to another edition of <em>Finding Your Frequency.<\/em> I&#8217;m Brian Sexton, joined today by Miranda Gon of Lex Aero here in Jacksonville, a law firm specializing in aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> How are you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> I\u2019m well, thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> Why aviation? Why did you choose to focus in that area with your law firm? Was it underserved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> Well, candidly, I fought it for a long time, actually. I have a background in aviation \u2014 I\u2019m an Army aviator and had the opportunity to fly Black Hawks. My law partner has many years of experience flying in the general aviation sector. I\u2019ve been an attorney for well over ten years and ended up working for GE Aviation. It seemed like I was fighting an uphill battle, so I finally acquiesced and listened to my law partner. We started Lex Aero, focusing on aviation law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t necessarily think it\u2019s an underserved area. There are firms that do it, but what we offer is a unique perspective \u2014 we both have the credibility of being aviators and pilots, and we approach our clients\u2019 issues with that mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> Can you say again what you flew? Because you flew Black Hawks \u2014 you flew Black Hawks, for goodness\u2019 sake!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> Yeah, in combat. I did deploy overseas, but I didn\u2019t see any combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> But still, you were prepared for combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> Yeah, I would say flying in the desert is kind of like flying in a snow globe \u2014 but with sand. That does give you a unique perspective on aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> What are some of the big challenges that you or your clients are facing? What are the things that they bring to you to help them solve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> A lot of it is contract management and negotiation. We do a lot of sale and purchase of aircraft. Ultimately, many of our clients \u2014 whether aviation is a hobby or a business \u2014 share the commonality that it\u2019s expensive. So our clients come to us hoping to prevent or resolve issues that could be financially devastating. We focus on helping them protect their interests and manage risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> So you\u2019re dealing with corporate aviation or even enthusiasts \u2014 people who want to buy an airplane and fly it out of the hangar on a Saturday?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> The whole gamut, actually. General aviation covers everything that isn\u2019t military aviation and isn\u2019t the scheduled airlines \u2014 everything in between. That includes enthusiasts, weekend owner-operators, flight schools, maintenance facilities, fixed-base operators, airport authorities, FAA enforcement issues, corporate flight departments, and charter operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> You talked about both you and your partner being aviators. Do you find that most lawyers who work in this space don\u2019t fly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> I\u2019d hate to put a percentage on it \u2014 some do, and some don\u2019t. You can be a very successful attorney who manages big truck cases but has never been a semi driver and still do great. But with aviation, it gives you a level of credibility and understanding behind the scenes \u2014 what you might experience as an aviator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> I\u2019ve never flown a plane, but my son is a pilot, and I\u2019ve been with him. I\u2019m always amazed at how much you have to prepare to fly and how much you have to balance what\u2019s going on around you \u2014 looking through the screen, listening to the headset. What about your training and your time behind the stick has helped you transition to the law?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> Great question. You really have to be deliberate \u2014 there\u2019s a lot of planning involved. It\u2019s tenacious and tedious, but the better the planning, the more successful the outcome. It\u2019s a lot about task management and being able to manage the sequence of flight as you go. That background helps us manage our clients\u2019 matters with the same discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about transitioning out of the military \u2014 which is a big team \u2014 to working for a corporation, and then to working for yourself. Going from being a pilot to being a lawyer to having your own firm \u2014 that\u2019s a lot of transition in ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> I would say the commonality through all of that is discipline and consistency. Each experience \u2014 military, corporate, and entrepreneurship \u2014 has been unique, and I\u2019ve learned from each one. But what\u2019s allowed me to be successful is consistency, tenacity, and hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> Part of <em>Finding Your Frequency<\/em> is dialing in who you are and who you want to be. What was it about being a pilot that led you to want to be a lawyer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> Actually, I was a lawyer first. I was in the middle of law school and had plans to go active-duty JAG for the military. I was approached about the opportunity to pursue aviation and thought it would be the opportunity of a lifetime. I figured I could always go JAG later. I applied, was approved, and got a flight school slot after graduating law school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Law school came more naturally to me \u2014 aviation didn\u2019t, and I was intimidated by flight school. But it was a fantastic opportunity that really tested my mettle. It\u2019s an accomplishment I treasure immensely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> The open-mindedness to change course like that \u2014 to have a plan and then pivot \u2014 is impressive. What about your personality makes you open to ideas like that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> I feel like I can adapt and pivot easily. I\u2019m always looking for opportunities for self-growth, and it just seemed like a natural opportunity to take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brian:<\/strong> Who would be a good candidate to be a client for Lex Aero?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Miranda:<\/strong> Anyone who works in the general aviation business.
