And joining me from Baltimore, Maryland is Charmaine Nokuri with Nokuri Digital Solutions. Charmaine, how are you? It\u2019s good to finally see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>I\u2019m doing well, Chris. Thanks for having me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>So\u2014you\u2019re doing some amazing stuff. This whole world of AI, branding, and marketing can be very confusing. But before we get into the work you\u2019re doing in that space, let\u2019s give a little background on you. Where are you originally from, and how did you get into digital marketing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>I\u2019m originally from Northern Virginia\u2014grew up in the Dulles Corridor. I actually went to computer camp with one of the founders of the internet\u2019s son. Vint Cerf was one of the founders, and his son Bennett and I used to go to camp together.<br>So you could say I grew up with the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My first job out of college was as a front-end developer creating CD-ROMs for government agencies. I worked for a boutique development company in Herndon, Virginia, doing projects for places like the IRS. That was back in the early 2000s when the internet was just taking off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and put my children\u2019s father through medical school, so I created my first company: Curry Technology Solutions. I was basically a 1099 contractor developing Flash CD-ROMs, doing front-end development and desktop publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the internet evolved, and especially when Flash started going out of style (thanks to Steve Jobs), I shifted into digital marketing. I got my master\u2019s from Virginia Tech in Instructional Technology and focused on educational media. But once Flash was phased out, I moved into SEO, Google search, paid ads\u2014basically every aspect of digital marketing as it was emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, I developed my own best practices, worked with billion-dollar companies, built processes, and now I run Nokri Digital Solutions\u2014offering both digital marketing and technology consulting for startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>That\u2019s wonderful. And you bring decades of experience into this field, even though you look like you\u2019re twenty-one! So you focus specifically on startups\u2014small to medium-sized businesses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>Yes, mostly startups and small to medium businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>So how is it being a business owner in this space?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>It\u2019s definitely challenging. One of the biggest challenges is cross-functional communication. My background comes from the enterprise level, where people have formal marketing or business education. Translating terminology is easier there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But with small businesses, you really become an educator. Many didn\u2019t go to marketing school, don\u2019t have MBAs, and may not understand how technology and business intersect. So I do a lot of teaching.<br>Honestly, that has been the core of my career\u2014educating people on how technology and business work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>Absolutely. I was talking to someone about this earlier. The analogy I used was: just because you&#8217;re a great chef doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re a great restaurant owner. Same thing here\u2014even tech-savvy people don\u2019t necessarily know marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So someone like you can bolt on as a partner and fill that gap\u2014at a far lower cost than hiring five or ten full-time people. Bringing decades of expertise is a huge value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, what\u2019s your value proposition? Why Nokri Digital Solutions versus someone else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>We bring over twenty-five years of digital experience. We\u2019re not a fly-by-night group that took a few YouTube bootcamps. We grew up with the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve worked with multinational organizations\u2014Astellas Pharmaceuticals, Karl Lagerfeld, DKNY. We bring enterprise-level solutions to small and medium businesses, making high-quality strategy accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>Where do you see the major pain points for small to medium businesses? What issues make them pick up the phone and call you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>A huge challenge is how fast everything changes. A lot of small businesses don\u2019t realize they\u2019re on the <strong>same internet<\/strong> as the big players. There\u2019s no \u201csmall-business internet.\u201d If you\u2019re an artist, you\u2019re on the same internet as Beyonc\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re competing with the big guys, and the digital landscape changes constantly. What worked yesterday may not work today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major issue is <strong>digital Darwinism<\/strong>\u2014if you aren\u2019t evolving fast enough with technology, you can become the next Blockbuster or Toys \u201cR\u201d Us. Small businesses have fewer resources, so having strong consultants is critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also a lot of misinformation online\u2014people selling courses claiming you\u2019ll become a millionaire in two weeks. It doesn\u2019t work like that. Algorithms change, platforms change, rules change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need advisors. As a person of faith, I always say: <em>Plans fail for lack of counsel.<\/em> Business is a team sport\u2014you need good coaches and players on your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>I love that. Since you\u2019re a woman-owned business, I want to ask this\u2014especially for the young women watching: What advice would you give someone who wants to become a business owner?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>Get therapy.<br>And get a good pharmacist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a competitive environment. My daughter just graduated from Stanford Law and is in Silicon Valley now. We\u2019re all in the pressure cooker\u2014private equity, tech, startups. Business is a blood sport. You have to be prepared. It\u2019s not for the faint of heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>That\u2019s so true. Starting a business is easy\u2014running one is hard. And unless you hire people, you\u2019re the CFO, the CMO, the accountant, and everything else. That\u2019s why having someone like you come in with experience is invaluable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>Exactly. And many Americans are behind on tech because our education system didn\u2019t keep up. That\u2019s why H-1B visas became so critical\u2014we imported tech talent because we lacked enough at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is now leveling the playing field. It gives Americans access to advisors and tools they didn&#8217;t have before. But people still try to \u201cadd AI\u201d onto broken systems\u2014without data governance, without process. You can\u2019t just sprinkle AI on top of chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris:<\/strong><br>Exactly. And I love that you help companies figure out the <em>actual<\/em> problem they\u2019re trying to solve before diving in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Charmaine\u2014how do people find you and Nokri Digital Solutions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charmaine:<\/strong><br>Right now, the best place is LinkedIn.
